What is the Federal SSI payment amount?

Excerpted from "Social Security Handbook". See the up-to-date, official Social Security Handbook at ssa.gov.

2180. What is the Federal SSI payment amount?

Federal SSI benefits are paid at different rates depending on whether you have an eligible spouse and whether you have an "essential person" (see §2110):

  1. If you do not have an eligible spouse - you are due the FBR of $637 per month in 2008, provided you have no countable income; or

  2. If you are an eligible couple - You are due the FBR of $956 per month in 2008, provided you have no countable income.

Both of these rates are established in the Social Security Act, and are subject to annual cost-of-living adjustments (COLA's). The COLA increases the FBR effective in January based on the increase in the Consumer Price Index.

why are married couples penalized financially ? A couple gets less together than they would as individuals.

How much is it this year?? Because I read that it went up because the cost of living went up this year.

Maximum Federal Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payment amounts increase with the cost-of-living increases that apply to Social Security benefits. The latest such increase, 3.6 percent, becomes effective January 2012.

SSI amounts for 2012
The monthly maximum Federal amounts for 2012 are $698 for an eligible individual, $1,048 for an eligible individual with an eligible spouse, and $350 for an essential person.

If my mom gets $743 a moth for her social security, and now has no other income, is she elegible for ssi? And how do they determine how much that will be? are there assistance programs for food and utilities also?

To qualify for SSI, one must be age 65 or older, blind, or disabled. There are also income and resource (asset) limitations. For example, your resources (cash and other assets) must be less than $2,000 as a single person.

The SSI Federal Payment Amounts for 2012 is $698 for an individual. One's Social Security benefit is netted against the SSI benefit, so it seems unlikely your mother would benefit from SSI.

However, some states offer an SSI benefit that's higher than the federal amount, so you may want to contact the SSA directly to see what your mother may qualify for.
