2196. Can the time limit for filing an appeal or hearing be extended?

Your time limit for filing a request for reconsideration, hearing, or review by the Appeals Council may be extended if you show you had good cause for failing to file the request within the appropriate time limit. The decision as to whether or not to grant the extension is made by the office responsible for making the reconsideration, by the ALJ, or by the Appeals Council, depending upon who has jurisdiction over the case. See §2015.
