Hello, during the summer I was working for a painting company and they made me use their pressure washer far longer than an apprentice painter should (sometimes 4-5 hours a day non-stop) eventually I got carpal tunnel syndrome for this and had to quit my job, now I make no money whatsoever and can't hold a job because of this, even typing this now is hard for me.

I was wondering if I am eligible for SSI and if so how would I go about starting this?

If you would like to email me in private: not__ AT

SSI (Supplemental Security Income) is intended for disabled or elderly folks with little income or assets. It's more likely you're looking to qualify for SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance).

I have seen some evidence indicating that carpal tunnel may qualify for SSDI.

However, the criteria to qualify for SSDI is fairly strict.

You are considered disabled under Social Security rules if:

  • You cannot do work that you did before;
  • The SSA decides that you cannot adjust to other work because of your medical condition(s); and
  • Your disability has lasted or is expected to last for at least one year or to result in death.

You may have better results with worker's compensation.
