My local SS office hours are 9-3:30pm. I am trying to help my elderly mother meet a 5 day deadline of paperwork for housing assistance and these abbreviated office hours make it extremely difficult to work around without me having to take time off from work! If you can ONLY be open for 6.5 hrs. may I suggest 2pm to 8:30pm!

First off they are not only open 6.5 hours, the workers actually go in as early as 7:00 am and work as late as 6:00pm. They are only open to the public the hours that the person above mentioned. The reason being, they are understaffed and overworked. As far as the longer hours, it's not a restaurant business honey it is an office job. Most people that work office jobs do it because of the convenient hours for their family. With a job as stressful as that job and late hours I doubt yu would find many people that would go for it. Not after they actually worked the job anyway. Dealing with the public is never easy, but it is especially hard when your overworked and the people you wait on are rude, think you owe them something, and unappreciative. You said you couldn't take your maother because you work during those hours. Here's a thought maybe your employer should change thier hours so you can go in later and make it into your local office. Or would that be to much of an inconvenience for you to work later?

Response to the attitude tone concerning business hours @ the SSI. Maybe one late night once a week would benefit both the client & the worker.

i agree with you that they should at least make one night open later or earlier to help with the public. the other person who responded about this not being a restaurant, they are not understanding that unlike many businesses, you HAVE to go to the SS office. Like most government offices, they could care less about if the public can easily go in there, because they do not profit on if you can make it that office, a restaurant needs you to go in their to make a profit. And that person who replied that says most people go in their think that they owe them something, well yes they do, why, because we pay their salary! They take my tax dollars to pay them, and then they feel that they are doing us a favor. The only business in the world is run like the government, and they wonder why people are angry with them and we are in a huge debt.

The logic of some people is questionable. Nobody owes you anything in life. Or are you going to round up the millions of americans living off welfare & get them to pay us our money back too? As u said, our tax dollars pay their bills. Or should the bank stay open until 7 or 8 to make it more convenient? Or maybe until midnight because then the folks who work a 3-11pm shift would have time to make it in too. The hours of any business (government or otherwise) are set that way for a reason. Deal with it. Find a way to get there to handle your business or ask another family member if they can do it for you. Seriously people.

GET A LIFE, LADY! IT IS PEOPLE LIKE YOU WITH YOUR STEREOTYPES THAT MAKE PEOPLE FEEL LESS THAN WHEN THEY HAVE TO COME INTO YOUR OFFICE TO HANDLE BUSINESS. EVERYBODY THAT RECIEVES SOCIAL SECURITY OR GOVERNMENT SERVICES FOR THE RECORD ARE NOT WAITING AROUND FOR A HANDOUT. DO EVERYBODY A BIG FAVOR AND KEEP ON LIVING. IF YOU ARE IN GOOD HEALTH, THEN CHANCES ARE YOU HAVE CHILDREN OR BETTER YET GRANDCHILDREN. IF YOU ARE EVER IN A POSITION TO HAVE TO GET ANY TYPE OF GOVERNMENT SERVICE THEN YOU WILL SEE EXACTLY WHAT IT FEELS LIKE TO HAVE TO COME TO A PLACE AND DEAL WITH PEOPLE LIKE WITH YOU WITH YOUR STINKING, SNOBBISH ATTITUDES. YOU BETTER PRAY TO GOD THAT YOU DON'T EVER HAVE A STROKE, AREN'T IN AN ACCIDENT AND REMAIN IN YOUR RIGHT MIND. ALL THE BEST ALABAMA STATE BENEFITS IN THE WORLD CAN'T PREPARE YOU FOR THE UNEXPECTED.

I AM A 35 YEAR OLD COLLEGE GRADUATE AS A MATTER A FACT I HAVE TWO DEGREES AND I WORK FULL-TIME AND SO DOES MY HUSBAND. WE HAVE A DISABLED CHILD THAT RECEIVES SOCIAL SECURITY. I WILL NOT EVEN GO INTO DETAIL ABOUT ALL THE RED TAPE AND NOT TO MENTION THE DISCREPENCIES IN MY SON'S CASE DUE TO YOUR HIGH TURNOVERS AND A STANK-DON'T CARE ATTITUDE. I WISH TO GOD MY SON DID NOT HAVE TO TAKE ANYTHING FROM YOU PEOPLE. ALL OF US WHO RECEIVE SERVICES AREN'T WELFORE WHORES ON CRACK WITH SIX DIFFERENT BABY DADDIES, EATING UP EVERYONE 'S TAX DOLLARS WHILE ON FOOD STAMPS. WE ARE IN AN ECONOMY AND I AM WILLING TO BET YOU THAT YOU ARE FEELING IT TOO (MRS. COUNTRY CLUB).

AND YES I AM MORE HIGHLY QUALIFIED THAN YOU WITH MY DEGREE IN VOCATIONAL REHAB TO DO YOUR JOB! BUT YOU KNOW WHAT? I WILL COME UP IN YOUR OFFICE AND SHOW YOU HOW TO TREAT AND TALK TO PEOPLE! WHAT GOES AROUND, COMES AROUND!

HAPPY KARMA!

I agree with you 100% !!!! The office hours should be extended or like u said change their hours to where ppl can come in and do their business after work hours.. Most of ppl work the schedule 8-5 and it is very difficult to take time off from work or even go during lunch hour. the location is far from work and the waiting time takes up all my lunch hour or even more... The over the phone conversation with social security agent is sometimes not helpful and i would need to go in person.

Amen to your comment! I am happy with what u have said. I agree with the hours opened to the public is not convenient or at least if the employers do go in 7 am in the morning then why don't they open to the public so they can take care of their business before work and that is a helpful idea...or if they could at least stay longer than 3:30 pm. most business offices do open till 5 pm.

My sincere sympathies are with those who are trying hard to assist their loved ones. If only more would assist their own families, it would be easier for those who cannot do so for themselves. The hours for SS office ARE antiquated for today's 7/24 crazy work hours. When I worked in banking, even they changed their hours to accommodate the customers needs. I am not saying that the govmt employees aren't working extra long hours and taking on extra demands, we know they are, just as the rest of us are also doing (if you are even fortunate to have a job); but the hours to assist the citizens should be adjusted for daytime and nighttime accommodations even if only one or two days a week. We do appreciate the hard work and considerate treatment that we receive. I just wish that everyone had such a pleasant attitude and apologize for the rudeness that many have to endure, blogging is no excuse either. No one deserves to be treated disrespectfully but then, it cannot be reciprocated either.

I called SS 24 hr 1-800 No. Ms P. answered. She was very informative and extremely courteous and helpful. I was pleasantly surprised that the courtesy exceeded my expectations and better than many private Organizations. So were Ms. N. and associates from Joliet,Il. office. Keep up the good work.

Just want to say what a wonderful job everyone is doing at SSI.

It is hard to find good customer service, these days., so when I find it. I like to compliment.

Gloria was very proffesional and kind in helping me with my request.

Thank you Becky.

Ok... I am only 21 years old and I just have to say wow! This reads like a chat argument between my 17year old hostkid and his buddies... Immature and just not appropriate conversational arguments. That of a 17yr old brat with an attitude problem..
When he brats like this to me, I tell him; Come back wit that argument when you are 35 and more mature.... But I guess I won't be using that statement anymore, as you prove thar clearly even someone at the age of 35 can be incredibly immature...

Sincerely,
Emma

Having read all the comments, it's safe to assume the academic institutions these people attended were not too concerned with excellence in education - or at least the written word. I have been going back and forth with bureaucratic imbeciles who are bouncing me back and forth like a ping pong ball proximately relative to their abject inability to perform the job they are paid to do. To suggest they are unable to do their jobs because they are over burdened is ludicrous. The problem with the way this government is run is the lack of professional accountability. As a tradesman, if I have a problem performing a particular job function I am being paid to do, I am replaced IMMEDIATELY!!! That's the way it should be in all aspects of life. Why should someone be allowed to draw a paycheck for a job they are unable to adequately perform? With the economy in the rut it's in, I'm sure there are at least 12-1/2 million Americans more than qualified and willing to perform those job functions. Good luck with that!!!

You might want to contact the Social Security Office of Retirement Policy or view some of their papers.

They often collaborate with independent researchers on research projects and assist graduate students with retirement policy projects. If you are a student or researcher and would like to talk to them about collaborating, you can contact them at office.of.retirement.policy AT ssa.gov.

I sent in my divorce papers, license, student ID, birth certificate and SS card with my change of name form to the SSI. I received a letter saying it could not be processed. Do I have to go to the office to have this changed? I need to get my maiden name back.

It sounds like you provided the evidence needed to change your name per these requirements :

However, note all documents submitted must be either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency. The SSA cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies of documents.
