Husband NEVER worked..can he collect off wife?

My husband has no work record. We have been married for 28 years. Is it possible for him to collect off of my earnings?? He is trying to get disability insurance.

Most people who receive Social Security disability benefits are workers who qualify on their own records and meet the work and disability requirements. However, there are special situations where the criteria is relaxed somewhat :

  • Special Rules For People Who Are Blind Or Have Low Vision,
  • Benefits For Disabled Widows Or Widowers,
  • Benefits For Disabled Children,
  • Disability Benefits For Wounded Warriors

There also is the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program which helps the disabled, blind, and elderly who also have limited income and assets.

However if you (the wife) have moderate or better income or assets, it's unlikely your husband would qualify for much of an SSI benefit as your (the wife's) income and assets will be imputed to your husband to a degree.

Still, I'd contact Social Security directly to see about your particular situation.
