I have an injury and have not been to work since last october... I will probably have surgery, which the recovery for the kind of work i have done in the past, will be about 6 months. Would that theoretically make me eligible for temporary disability benefits? and would I get back pay?
Social Security temporary disability
In general, Social Security does not provide benefits for "temporary" disability. There is a five month waiting period, and one is not entitled to disability benefits for any month in the waiting period.
The five month waiting period ensures that during the early months of disability, the SSA does not pay benefits to persons who do not have long-term disabilities.
In your case, it sounds like you may be disabled for a total of something like 15 to 18 months. So you may be eligible for Social Security disability benefits.
Please contact Social Security directly for your case.
