Not understanding the logic of having someone who is married divorce in order to receive disability. Please help me understand this. Parents have been married for 30 years and they are being told that in order for the other to receive benefits they have to divorce. Seems unethical and against what the bible teaches.
Disability and marriage
This depends on the type of disability benefit. If you receive "standard" or "work-based" SSDI, there is no marriage penalty.
If you receive SSI disability, note that SSI has an income component. Marriage may raise household income and disqualify one for SSI.
