I have an draft account through my Insurance company, and they sent me a letter stating that the Social Security Admin. notified them of my death and sent paperwork asking for 'someone' to send proof. I called them and they gave me instructions on clearing this issue with them, however they could not help me with finding out how the SSA has made this mistake and who else got the same notice from the SSA.
Now, I wonder who this report has gone out to besides the Insurance company! I have been looking for an hour on SSA web pages for someone to report to or at least, get me someone who can help. I see no links to anything that addresses this problem.
The only reason I can see for anyone reporting my death is for the purpose of theft, identity or money from my accounts.
Potential identiry theft
It's possible there was a "fat finger" error and the Social Security number of a decedent matched yours. Identity theft is certainly another possibility.
The SSA has a couple pages regarding this. Contacting credit bureaus and your bank etc. may be in order.
