When a Parent passes

My Mother-in-law is under the impression that when she dies one last SS check will be direct-deposited into her account for us to us for funeral expenses. I thought you were able to receive $250 for funeral expenses but the regular check was stopped or the funds reversed back to the SS Administration. Where can I find the correct information?

If you're a surviving widow or widower, you may be eligible to receive a special death benefit payment of $255 on the worker's record. This payment can be made only to a spouse or minor children who meet certain requirements.

Social Security benefits are not paid for the month in which an individual dies. Example: An individual receives a Social Security check in June for the month of May, and dies after the receipt of that payment. The individual would be entitled to the check received in June (May's payment) because the individual lived throughout the month of May. However, the check issued in July (for the month of June) would have to be returned to Social Security because the individual did not live throughout the month of June.
