SSI and Social Security

I am a payee for my disabled brother who receives SSI. In August he will be 62 . Can he receive SSI and Social Security benefits or is it one or the other? His current SSI benefit is greater than his Social Security benefit would be. He does not have enough credits to receive Social Security Disability.

I assume you're asking if your brother can receive Social Security *retirement* benefits and SSI.

If your brother does not qualify for Social Security disability, it is doubtful he will qualify for Social Security retirement benefits. People need 10 years of work (40 credits) to be eligible for retirement benefits, and this number of credits is larger than the number of credits needed for disability benefits (generally).

Further, if your brother received Social Security retirement benefits, this income would reduce his SSI benefit.
