Unearned income and effect on SSI benefits
Unearned Income is all income that is not earned, such as Social Security benefits, pensions, State disability payments, unemployment benefits, interest income, and cash from friends and relatives.
Generally, the more income you have, the less your SSI benefit will be. If your countable income is over the allowable limit, you cannot receive SSI benefits. Some of your income may not count as income for the SSI program.
The following are some items that are not counted as income against SSI :
* the first $20 of most income received in a month;
* the first $65 of earnings and oneāhalf of earnings over $65 received in a month;
* the value of food stamps;
* income tax refunds;
* home energy assistance;

my social security retirement check
I just started receiving (I'm 62) my social security check in November, 2010...well, in December I got a job and January's check was down by $125. I thought I was allowed to make $14,101 for the year before my benefits were taken either away or take down.
Please help! Thanks

Retirement benefit cut due to wages
You likely will want to verify your case with the SSA. You are correct with the $14,160 a year figure; however, this $14,160 figure only applies during the "steady-state" period until you reach full retirement age.
In other words, there is a special rule that applies to earnings for one year, usually the first year of retirement, that may be affecting you.
