Highlights from the later document :

  • At end of FY 2008, 760,000 people were waiting for a disability hearing
  • On average, an individual waits 500 days to receive a decision
  • In FY 2009, SSA will target cases pending over 850 days
  • In FY 2008, SSA hired 190 new Administrative Law Judges (ALJs)

I'm so sorry for you. I feel your pain. I could tell almost the same exact story. I was hit by a car 10 years ago, and I have 2 children ages 7 and 15. My 70 year old mother lives w/ me, and she has cancer. And, I just found out yesterday that I cannot receive Family's First anymore because of welfare reform. See, you can only get assistance for a few years in your lifetime, and I've reached my limit. So, I'm afraid because that was my ONLY income. My sons father is $35,000 in arrears, but I'll never see it. I also teach my younger child at home. The fight for my benefits has been going on for 2 years, and I just won the right to have a hearing. My rep said it could take years before I actually go in front of a judge. I wish I had good news, but the sad fact is that there is none. All I do is pray. It's been a year since you wrote that, so where are you with your case now? I will pray for you. God bless.
