SSI makes monthly payments to people who have low income and few resources and are:
- Age 65 or older;
- Blind; or
- Disabled.
If you are applying for SSI, you also should ask for What You Need To Know When You Get Supplemental Security Income (SSI) (Publication No. 05-11011).
Disabled or blind children also can receive SSI. You can get more information in Benefits For Children With Disabilities (Publication No. 05-10026).
The basic SSI amount is the same nationwide. However, many states add money to the basic benefit. You can call us to find out the amounts for your state.

What is the Difference between SSI, and Social security Disability??
One is Supplemental security income, one is disability. You need to work a certain amount of quarters to qualify for disabilty. Do you have to be disabled to be on SSI, or just poor??? Can you get both. Someone said, if you disability benefits is more than 550 a month, that you can not get SSI, is that true. Someone said minimum wage workers can collect SSI, because they are styill poor, at minimum wage. How poor do you have to be to get SSI???
How much food stamps does a single person on disablity get. I think food stamp office cheats me. I had an administrative appeal, but office worker told wrong formula to law judge.
Difference between SSI and disability (SSDI)
In general, SSDI is for disabled folks with sufficient work history. There are no "income caps" for SSDI.
SSI is for low income disabled folks (including children), but also those who are simply elderly and disabled. There are strict income caps and reporting requirements for SSI.
