How can my son receive a letter from SSI (6 months after his death) stating that he is denied disability because a person that lived in the household died which no longer qualified him for SSI??? He died from the condition which he applied for in the first place??? I paid all his bills and expenses for over a year and was told that since I am his mother I do not qualify for reimbursement??? What a nightmare and a joke! People at the Pontiac office...have a little respect.
Disability determination when and death of claimant
The following is an excerpt regarding standard procedures in this type of case :
Notice of claimant's death after denial or cessation of disability benefits may raise a question as to whether the prior determination should be changed. When a claimant dies less than one year after denial or cessation of a period of disability, and survivors' benefits would be increased by an allowance, the DDS that made the original denial or cessation determination reviews the disability file and assumes jurisdiction over any further disability determination and possible reopening.
