I moved out of my parents home when I was 19 and graduated high school. ( I turned 19 in may graduated in June) My mother was receiving disability for me and it was stopped for some reason which I am not sure.
I went on to find a full time job in October which I have now been at for 6 years, my mother filed for SSI without me knowing and put herself as the payee. She recieved around 15,000 dollars which I had absolutely no clue she was getting seeing as I did not even live in her home. She recieved them from 2006 to 2008.
Social Security sent numerous letters to my mother informing her that we had been overpaid, I have had minimal contact with my mother since July 2006. In January of 2008 my mother moved out of ther house her and my father had together, I moved in with my dad to help him pay the bills, he was disabled and unable to read or write so he needed some form of help.
In march my father committed suicide my mother was not even living at that home and still apparently collecting benefits for me, I received a notice from my job that they were going to garnish my wages because I had been given many notices to repay the money that was overpaid.
I had never received any of them, I had not even lived in that home. I have been down to the Social Security building in Albany NY and they are saying that I have to pay this money back are there any steps I can take to get this turned around I have not ever recieved a payment from social security why do I have to pay this back?
