I am planning to retire from a clerical position in a California public school when I turn 60 in May. Because I'm a classified employee, I have paid into social security. I am also a surviving widow. How will that affect the amount of my Widow's benefit? My husband drew his social security at age 62 and died at age 64.
Surviving Widow eligible for pension
It's not clear if you're eligible for a pension from your school job, and for how long or to what degree you paid Social Security taxes.
If you are eligible for a pension through either your work or your husband, it's possible your Social Security benefit may be reduced either through the Government Pension Offset (GPO) or Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP).

Reporting the death of a Social Security beneficiary
Report the death by calling toll free, 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.
In addition, for the case of direct deposit, you should notify the bank or other financial institution of the beneficiary's death.
