My daughter has struggled and is in school on an IEP since 2nd grade with ADHD. Her deceased's Dad's benefit to her stops when she graduates (she is graduating at age 17 then turning 18). She will struggle ever to get a job for many reasons related to her ADHD. Could she possibly get a Social Security disability benefit? Would it be based on her Dad's work history paying into social security (he paid a lot and died young) . . . or ? I have been a stay at home Mom and was to have gotten child support, but now . . . . And my social security statement always shows I didn't work enough to be eligible for disability . . . . I am confused.
Benefits for an disabled adult who was disabled as a child
An adult disabled before age 22 may be eligible for child's benefits if a parent is deceased or receiving retirement or disability benefits. The SSA considers this a child's benefit because it is paid on a parent's Social Security earnings record. The SSA makes the disability decision using the disability rules for adults. The adult child including an adopted child or, in some cases, a stepchild, grandchild, or stepgrandchild—must be unmarried, age 18 or older, and have a disability that started before age 22.
