I presently receive Social Security Disability which converts seamlessly to Social Security Retiremnt at age 66. At age 66 I am requred by my previous employer to take a defined benefit retirement the proceeeds of which are nearlfy the same as SS retirement after taxes. I would like to delay SS retirement so that my benefit will increase just as it does if one delays retirement. Is that possible?.
Disability benefits and delayed retirement benefits
Please contact Social Security directly for this. As you indicate, upon reaching full retirement age (age 66 for folks born 1943-1954) your disability payments will convert to retirement benefits with no action on your part.
It sounds like you would like to suspend your retirement benefits and start them at a later age, for example, age 68. Delaying initiation of retirement benefits normally leads to a higher monthly benefit.
I suspect you can receive disability payments until age 66, then suspend retirement benefits and restart them at a higher rate later. However, I could not find specific information on this.
