Survivor Benefits...a few questions.

My husband died approx 18 months ago. I have 14 and 19 yr old sons. My oldest son's benefit stopped when he graduated from high school. The SS office tells me that my youngest son's benefit as well as mine(I am 44) will stop when he turns 16. How can this be when he isn't out of school. Also, I moved to a different home but still have not sold the home that we lived in when my husband died. I would like to rent it out as it has been on the market for some time and has not sold. Will this count as income? If I am letting them buy it on contract or doing a lease to own?

This does not sound accurate. It's true that YOUR benefit (as a caretaker of the young child) will end when the child turns 16. However, the benefit paid to your younger child will continue through age 18 (or up to age 19 if they are attending elementary or secondary school full time).

I assume you are receiving "normal survivor" benefits, and not any form of SSI. SSI is need based, so rental income may affect SSI benefits. However, "normal survivor" benefits are independent of income. So rental income will not affect your survivor benefits.

Of course you may have to pay income tax on this rental income, but there will be no effect on your survivor benefits.
