survivor benefit from stepdad death vs disability from biological dad

My son receives survivor benefits b/c of his stepdad's death in 1997. His biological father used to pay child support until he became ill about 3 years ago. He now receives disability. Is my son entitled to both survivor benefits for stepdad AND disability from biological father or is he only eligible for one or the other? If only eligible for one or the other, will the benefit that pays the most be awarded?

Please check with Social Security for your particular case. However, in general a child can receive benefits if the child has parent who is disabled or retired and entitled to Social Security benefits.

In general, when someone is eligible for "dual" benefits, Social Security will only pay the higher of the two benefits. Again, check with the SSA.
