I am school social worker and I have questions about SSI benefits to children with behavior problems I have seen and heard disturbing comments from children receiving "a check".
I am frustrated with the lack of checks and balances on parents of children receiving benefits. we have numerous children receiving benefits simply because they are diagnosed with ADD/ADHD and behavior issues Schools are inundated with parents who come in asking for copies of discipline records for their application process. Children are not given medication in order to collect major and minor infractions. Others are just simply misdiagnosed and lack discipline.
Students report to staff that their parents encourage them to misbehave in order to continue receiving SSI benefits. Although I realize there are many parents who utilize the benefits appropriately, we also have many who do not use it for reasons designed.
Children do not attend appointments to mental health regularly, do not receive medication regularly, parents are not responding to school calls, not giving correct demographic information ,etc. Please advise me as to what I can tell these parents who are guilty of the above issues. Parents are using this system as the only means of income and it is a problem. Thank you.

Yes, I agree, Parents make their children disabiled to collect benefits. I The system supports people who want free money and don't want to work. Honest, Hard Working People get nothing. My 9 yr old daughter has Spina Bifida and can't walk. We make many trips to Therapy, (Private Insurance) and Hospitals. All we get is the bill. Just yesterday, one of my son's classmates, age 20 told him that he had a doctor fill out paper work to say his was Authistic. Now he get an SSI check and does not have to work. Only in America.
ssi children
now it is very hard to prove a case for a child who has adhd or add to the ssa. my daughter has adhd and a mood disorder and a learning disabilty. ssa has denied her for the last 3 years. she is one of those kids who doesnot have a behavior issue. she does not get into trouble, she isvery quiet due to her liking to stay by herself. keep in mind she is nine years old.
on the other hand my sister daughter has add and she was recently apporved for ssi. her daughter is also not a behavior problem but she has been retained in 2 of her grade levels. she was apporved because she recently got layed off her job as a cna and she was last on her last end.
saying this to say, not all parents collect the check just to get over on the system. people are really in need of financial assistance. sides you have to prove alot to ssa about your resources before they will even approve you.
