I recently got married. I decided to change my last name. He has two last names though... (example: Robert Smith Jones) Do I take both last names?? I wouldn't want to. When we were at the clerks office & was asked what I want my last name to be, I only took one of the last names & that's what they put on the certificate. I'm very confused now.
Two last names and name change
In general, you can have two last names on your Social Security care if desired :

However, for a name change, the SSA will need to see evidence warranting the change (ex. marriage certificate). If your marriage certificate has only one last name, I can only see the SSA changing your name to the single last name.
