How do I change the bank account for direct deposit of checks

To change your direct deposit from one bank to another bank:

• Contact your bank, savings and loan or credit union; or
• Call Social Security toll-free at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), or
• Fill out a Direct Deposit Sign Up Form and take it to your financial institution or your Social Security office.

To change your direct deposit from one account to another account, you should contact SSA (be sure to have your Social Security number and a personal check or statement from you new account available). They will need information from these documents to start or make changes to your direct deposit.  Also, they recommend you wait until deposits or changes become effective before you close your old account.
