My brother is 57 and is on SSI disability and Medicare. He has been receiving his monthly benefits cheque but now it must be transferred to a direct deposit format. I am his rep payee, legal gdn, atty-in-facy as well as his eldest brother. Both our parents and all our grandparents are deceased.
I went to our bank and the lady assured me that all that needed to be done had been done when we opened a separate chequing acct in his name alone with me as rep payee. That was in mid 2012. I asked another bank teller this month and she said that the SSI folks at the local office here in Lebanon County PA were responsible. They told me to file a form which I did last year.
I filed online and via the US Mail. I contacted our local senators and representatives in Congress and Harrisburg PA. All assured me everything was OK and it just took a little time. I finally went to the social security website and found out that he is still listed as receiving his benefits by cheque!
If I phone these morons I will tell them exactly what I think of them because as a Gael my temper is hot and we always tell the truth no matter what! How the Hell do I get these baka idiots in Harrisburg and Washington DC to get off their asses and help us? I would like an answer asap please. keiman0 AT yahoo.com is my email address. Thanks I hope- keimanzero in Campbelltown (Palmyra) PA.
Starting direct deposit
Yes, as you indicate, you should be able to start direct deposit online. Here is the link for that :

Note you are required by the U.S. Department of the Treasury to switch to electronic payments by March 1, 2013. The following site may assist you with this :
