Will my SSI change?

I'm planning on moving out of my parents' from California to Mansfield, Texas. Not only will I be far away from the safety of my parents' house but I will be living on my own. Will moving other there effect my current SSI? In an unrelated question, am I supposed to report money that I get for school?

Some States supplement the Federal SSI benefit with additional payments. This makes the total SSI benefit levels higher in those states. SSI benefit amounts and state supplemental payment amounts vary based upon your income, living arrangements, and other factors.

The US SSA administers the state supplement for California. You may contact the SSA about your total benefit amount.

The Texas pays and administer their own supplemental payments and you may contact the Texas government for payment information.

I have not seen indication that you must reapply for SSI if you move to another state. However, at a minimum you must inform the SSA of your move.

You also must inform the SSA if your housing situation changes. In other words, you must notify SSA :

  • If you move or change your address skip list of things you must report
  • If you change direct deposit accounts
  • If someone moves into or out of your household
  • If there is a change in your income or the income of family members

It would be best to contact the SSA directly before moving.
