I am a widow receiving death benefits for my 14 year old daughter. I was told I could not receive widow's benefits while taking care of my daughter because I make too much money. Is there a salary limit?
Survivor benefits while taking care of 14 year-old
I have not seen an income limit for the case where a survivor provides care to a child less than age 16. In general, a widow or widower can receive benefits at any age if she or he takes care of a surviving child who is receiving Social Security benefits and younger than age 16 or disabled.
However, I believe that to receive these benefits, you yourself would have to be taking care of the child. It sounds like have a job that "makes too much money" and therefore do not "take care" of your daughter. I believe the "lack of care" (more accurately full-time job) that is the issue.
Please contact the SSA for details on your particular case.
