My husband has been deceased since 1998 and i would like my maiden name back. What do i have to do to get this done? I would like to know if I can get help with this. I cannot afford to do it and I need to know my options.

Change name legally first, then inform Social Security

If you legally change your name because of marriage, divorce, court order or any other reason, tell Social Security so that you can get a corrected card.
First change your name legally (through marriage, divorce, court order etc.) then inform Social Security of the new legal name.
