Hello my name is Karolyn, I have been disabled since 1989. I was then 19 years old. Collecting disability benefits under my fathers SS benefits. My father passed away in 2001 and I am still collecting to date, disabeled for life caused by multiple MVA's /multiple injuries. My question !! is I am the only beneficiary to collect on my father's SSD survivor benefits. Why haven't I received an increase since he passed when it say's your entilted to 50 % of his benefits since I am the only beneficiary. I only receive about 30%, In reguards to my mother.who has been deceased since 1989 and SS admin. refuses to let me collect on her benefit's which are not large. I am only receiving around $900.00 mo. at age 42 ???? Why ??? any help would be much appreciated, barely getting by !!!! Thank you......
Survivor benefits for adult disabled survivor
I'd encourage you to contact Social Security, or possibly a third party resource such as a lawyer, if you feel your benefit is too low.
How much a survivor would receive in benefits depends on the worker's average lifetime earnings. The higher the earnings were, the higher survivor benefits would be. SSA calculates a basic amount as if the worker had reached full retirement age at the he or she died.
A child under age 19 or disabled typically would receive 75 percent of that basic "full retirement" amount.
Note the average monthly Social Security benefit for a retired worker was about $1,177 at the beginning of 2011.
