I started collecting widower benefit at age 57 of 75% pia and my child (age 13) is also collecting child benefit of 75% pia. Now I am approaching age 62. What choices/changes if any should I consider at age 62?
Thank you.
Survivor benefits switching to retirement benefits
If you have sufficient work record, you may qualify for a higher retirement benefit based on your work record.
If you receive widow's benefits, and you will qualify for a retirement benefit that's more than your survivors benefit, you can switch to your own retirement benefit as early as age 62. The rules are complicated and vary depending on your situation, so talk to a Social Security representative about the options available to you.
