SSI and Veteran's Pension

Hello,

My husband was just approved for Veteran's Pension (non-service connected disability) and is supposed to receive his first check within 15 days. He currently receives SSI about $850 a month. His Veteran's Pension will be considerably more, about $1360 per month.

Have to assume this means his SSI will stop, as well as his Medicaid. (He's covered by the VA so will have medical care). We plan to talk to his worker tomorrow on the phone since it is too late to call the SS office today.

Does anyone here know anything about this kind of situation? It is the end of the month, so we're wondering if his SSI will still be direct deposited and we will have to pay it back. We just want to be very careful what we do at this point so we don't end up having a problem! This is all new to us.

Any general advice you can give would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

I suggest contacting the SSA directly regarding your situation.

If you have income other than your SSI, you must report this to the SSA. And you should tell the SSA if the amount of your other income increases, decreases, or if the income stops. Usually, changes in your income in a month will affect your SSI payment two months later.

Under SSI, income includes cash, checks and other things you get that can be used for food or shelter. Department of Veterans Affairs benefits are specifically listed as a source of "income".

In spite of your best efforts, if you still wind up with an "overpayment", you may ask for a reconsideration, waiver, or both.
