Benefits after death

My father received his SS payments on the third Wed. of every month. He died on Monday, Feb 18, and his payment for January was deposited in his account on Wed. Feb 20., which I was going to use to pay his house payments and final bills because I am on his bank account. But then the bank told me that SS withdrew the payment the next day. I thought that the payment was valid because my father lived through the month of January. Why did they take it back?

Yes, I'd have to agree with you.

Social Security pays retirement, disability, and survivor benefits the month following the month in which you earned the benefit. For example, if you earned a benefit in January, they'd pay the benefit in February.

Your father should receive the February 20 payment for January, but would not be due a payment in March (for February).

I would contact the SSA directly for this.
