SS # FOR K1/K2 VISA HOLDER

I just went to SS Office today and applied for SSN, unfortunately I was not able to apply using my MARRIED NAME. I got married to my fiance last February 18, 2011 here in STL. But i read some reviews that some K1 VISA HOLDER were able to get SS# using their MARRIED NAME. Also, I was not able to apply SS# for my son who is 6 years old. They said in the office he needs an EAD first. I just want us to have SS# with my married name for insurance and tax purposes...and bank accounts. Please help. Gob bless and thank you.
